Taren Point Waste Management Facility

Visy Industries Australia Pty Ltd, a leading integrated packaging and recycling company, proposed to expand its recycling facility at 43 Bay Road, Taren Point, NSW. The proposal sought development consent to validate a previous 2004 approval and to operate as a Resource Transfer Station or Materials Recovery Facility with a maximum throughput of 60,000 tonnes per annum. The facility sought approval for 24-hour operations on weekdays and limited hours on weekends.

Key findings of the EIS were traffic impacts were minimal, with only four additional truck movements during peak hours and no increase in staff numbers. Air quality assessments show compliance with NSW EPA standards, while noise levels are also deemed acceptable. Flood management measures, including concrete bunding, are in place to protect the site. The existing fire management system is sufficient for the proposed increase in throughput.

The project supports government recycling targets, enhances community recycling efforts, and generates socio-economic benefits while maintaining negligible environmental impacts. The Southern Region approved the project contingent on implementing proposed management measures.
